Recently I have been delving into The 4 Tendencies by Gretchen Rubin. I have found it to be a great book that has helped me understand myself better, and in turn, increase my productivity as a result ...

The 4 Tendencies has helped me to understand myself better. It's well worth a read!

The idea is simple. There are 4 tendencies:

  1. The Upholder - A self-starter, self-motivated, reliable, sticks to schedule, meets expectations (internal and external), uneasy when rules are ambiguous or undefined.

  2. The Questioner - Data driven, willing to play devils advocate, directed internally, unwilling to accept authority without justification, can suffer analysis-paralysis, may refuse to observe expectations.

  3. The Obliger - Feels obligation to meet expectations by others, good team player and leaders, responds to external accountability, susceptible to over-work and burnout, has trouble saying no.

  4. The Rebel - Independent minded, thinks outside the box, in touch with authentic desires, bucks social conventions, spontaneous, likely to resist when told to do something, thinks ordinary rules do not apply to them.

Whilst there may be an overlap between a couple of them, we generally fall into one main category. Which do you think you are? You can click here to take the online quiz if you want to find out. It really is well worth doing.

"I came out as The Rebel, which is no surprise I'm sure
to those who know me!"

It doesn't matter which of the 4 tendencies you are though. As Gretchen states, "The happiest, healthiest, most productive people aren't those from a particular tendency, but rather they're the people who have figured out how to harness the strengths of their tendency, counteract the weaknesses, and build lives that work for them."

Looking at the 4 tendencies from a productivity point of view is really helpful, so I will be talking about how to be more productive depending on your type over the next few blog posts.

Do let me know what tendency you are and if you think the quiz is an accurate reflection of yourself!
